Best Serengeti Safari Itinerary & Tour Packages

Safari & Travel Tips

The best Serengeti safari itinerary takes you beyond an ordinary wildlife tour. It gives you enough time to explore Tanzania’s legendary plains, follow seasonal wildlife movements, enjoy rewarding game drives, and stay in carefully selected camps or lodges.

Serengeti National Park is famous for its vast landscapes, exceptional predator sightings, and the Great Wildebeest Migration. Lions, elephants, cheetahs, leopards, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeests, and numerous bird species can all be encountered during a well-planned safari.

However, the Serengeti is enormous. Trying to visit it too quickly can mean spending much of your holiday driving between destinations. A good itinerary balances travel time with wildlife viewing and positions you in the most rewarding areas for your chosen season.

Our recommended Serengeti itinerary combines Tarangire National Park, the Serengeti, and the Ngorongoro Crater. It can also be customized to include Lake Manyara, Ndutu, the Northern Serengeti, or a beach holiday in Zanzibar.

Recommended Seven-Day Serengeti Safari Itinerary

This seven-day itinerary is ideal for travelers who want a comfortable pace and sufficient time in the Serengeti. It includes three nights within the Serengeti ecosystem and visits several of Tanzania’s most celebrated wildlife destinations.

Day 1: Arrival in Arusha

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha Airport, you will be welcomed by our representative and transferred to your hotel in Arusha.

Depending on your arrival time, you can relax at the hotel or explore part of Arusha. Your safari consultant or guide will brief you about the journey, answer your questions, and confirm the following morning’s departure time.

Accommodation: Budget, mid-range or luxury hotel in Arusha
Meals: Depending on your selected accommodation plan

Day 2: Arusha to Tarangire National Park

After breakfast, your professional safari guide will collect you from the hotel. You will travel to Tarangire National Park, approximately two hours from Arusha.

Tarangire is known for its ancient baobab trees, open savannah and large elephant population. During the dry season, the Tarangire River attracts animals from across the surrounding ecosystem. This creates excellent opportunities to see elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, buffaloes and predators.

You will enjoy a game drive and lunch inside the park. In the late afternoon, you will travel to your lodge or tented camp.

Safari highlights:

  • Large elephant herds
  • Ancient baobab trees
  • Lions, leopards and cheetahs
  • Tarangire River wildlife
  • More than 500 recorded bird species

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp near Tarangire or Karatu
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 3: Tarangire or Karatu to Serengeti National Park

After breakfast, you will begin your journey toward Serengeti National Park. The route normally passes through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where you can enjoy impressive views of the surrounding highlands.

As you descend toward the Serengeti plains, the landscape gradually opens into seemingly endless grasslands. The name Serengeti comes from the Maasai expression often translated as “endless plains.”

You will enter the Serengeti and enjoy an afternoon game drive on the way to your accommodation. Depending on the season, you may encounter large herds of wildebeests and zebras or see lions resting near rocky outcrops.

Accommodation: Lodge, tented camp or public campsite in the Serengeti
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 4: Full-Day Serengeti Game Drive

Today is dedicated to exploring Serengeti National Park. An early start is recommended because animals are generally more active during the cooler morning hours.

Your guide will choose the route according to recent wildlife movements and reports from other professional guides. You may explore river valleys, plains, woodland habitats and granite kopjes.

The Central Serengeti, commonly known as Seronera, is particularly famous for its resident wildlife. The Seronera River provides a reliable water source, attracting animals throughout the year.

Possible sightings include:

  • Lions and lion prides
  • Leopards resting in acacia trees
  • Cheetahs hunting on open plains
  • Elephants and buffaloes
  • Hippos and crocodiles
  • Giraffes, zebras and wildebeests
  • Hyenas, jackals and serval cats
  • Eagles, vultures and other birds

You can choose between a full-day game drive with a picnic lunch or separate morning and afternoon drives, depending on the location of your accommodation.

Accommodation: Lodge, tented camp or campsite in the Serengeti
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 5: Explore Another Serengeti Region

The best Serengeti safari itinerary should include enough time to explore more than one wildlife area whenever distances and seasonal conditions permit.

Your route on this day will depend on the time of year:

  • December to April: Explore the southern plains and Ndutu region for the calving season.
  • May to June: Follow migrating herds through the Western Corridor and central areas.
  • July to October: Visit the Northern Serengeti for possible Mara River crossings.
  • Throughout the year: Explore Central Serengeti for dependable resident wildlife and predators.

A private safari provides the greatest flexibility because the route can be adapted to seasonal wildlife movements. It also allows you to spend longer at sightings without following a fixed group schedule.

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in the selected Serengeti region
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 6: Serengeti to Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Begin with a morning game drive in the Serengeti. The early hours provide another opportunity to see predators, grazing animals and beautiful landscapes before leaving the park.

After lunch, continue toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Depending on your accommodation, you may stay near the crater rim or in the Karatu highlands.

A crater-rim property offers spectacular views and convenient access for the following morning’s descent. Accommodation around Karatu can provide excellent comfort at a more affordable price.

Accommodation: Crater-rim lodge, Karatu lodge or campsite
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 7: Ngorongoro Crater and Return to Arusha

After an early breakfast, descend approximately 600 meters into the Ngorongoro Crater for a memorable game drive.

The crater supports a remarkable concentration of wildlife. Its grasslands, wetlands, forests and permanent water sources create habitats for many different species.

Animals commonly encountered include:

  • Lions
  • Elephants
  • Buffaloes
  • Zebras
  • Wildebeests
  • Hippos
  • Spotted hyenas
  • Gazelles
  • Warthogs

The Ngorongoro Crater is also one of Tanzania’s best places to search for the critically endangered black rhinoceros, although sightings can never be guaranteed.

After your game drive and picnic lunch, ascend from the crater and return to Arusha. You can be transferred to your hotel, Arusha Airport or Kilimanjaro International Airport, depending on your onward travel plans.

Travelers flying from Kilimanjaro International Airport should select a sufficiently late departure because the airport is approximately one hour from Arusha, depending on traffic.

Meals: Breakfast and lunch

Alternative Five-Day Serengeti Safari Itinerary

Travelers with limited time can choose a five-day itinerary:

Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire

Drive from Arusha to Tarangire National Park for a game drive. Stay near Tarangire or Karatu.

Day 2: Tarangire to Serengeti

Travel through the Ngorongoro highlands and continue into the Serengeti for an afternoon game drive.

Day 3: Full Day in Serengeti

Enjoy a full day of wildlife viewing in Central Serengeti or another seasonally appropriate area.

Day 4: Serengeti to Ngorongoro

Take a morning Serengeti game drive before traveling toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater to Arusha

Descend into the crater for a game drive and return to Arusha in the late afternoon.

This option provides an excellent introduction to northern Tanzania, although the seven-day itinerary offers a more relaxed experience.

Best Time to Follow This Serengeti Itinerary

The Serengeti is a year-round destination. The best travel dates depend on the wildlife experience you want.

December to March: Calving Season

During this period, enormous herds gather on the nutrient-rich plains of the southern Serengeti and Ndutu region. Many wildebeest calves are born between January and February.

The abundance of young animals attracts lions, cheetahs, hyenas and other predators. This makes the calving season excellent for dramatic wildlife encounters and photography.

April and May: Green Season

Rain transforms the Serengeti into a lush landscape. Visitor numbers are usually lower, creating a quieter safari experience.

Some camps may close temporarily because of road conditions, but many central properties remain operational. The green season can be rewarding for photography, birdwatching and travelers looking for seasonal value.

June and July: Western and Northern Movement

As the plains become drier, migrating herds begin traveling north. Wildlife may concentrate around the Western Corridor before moving toward the Northern Serengeti.

River crossings can occur, but their timing depends on rainfall and herd movements.

August to October: Northern Serengeti

The Northern Serengeti is particularly popular during these months because migrating herds may cross the Mara River.

Crossings are unpredictable. No guide or safari operator can guarantee a particular crossing time, but staying several nights in the northern area improves your chances of witnessing this natural event.

November: Short Rains and Returning Herds

The short rains encourage fresh grass growth, and the herds begin moving south again. November can offer excellent wildlife viewing with fewer visitors than the busiest months.

Choosing the Right Serengeti Region

The correct safari region is more important than simply choosing the longest itinerary.

Serengeti region Best known for Recommended period
Central Serengeti Resident wildlife and predators Throughout the year
Southern Serengeti and Ndutu Calving and large herds December–April
Western Corridor Grumeti River and migration movement May–July
Northern Serengeti Mara River and migration crossings July–October
Eastern Serengeti Open plains and cheetahs Seasonal

Central Serengeti is usually included in first-time itineraries because of its dependable wildlife population. Seasonal camps can then be added according to the migration’s expected location.

Private or Shared Serengeti Safari?

Both options can provide an unforgettable experience, but they are designed for different travelers.

Private Safari

On a private safari, the vehicle and professional guide are dedicated exclusively to your party.

A private tour is recommended for:

  • Couples and honeymooners
  • Families with children
  • Photographers
  • Groups of friends
  • Travelers visiting Ndutu or Northern Serengeti
  • Guests wanting flexible game-drive schedules
  • Travelers with specific accommodation preferences

Private tours allow you to decide how long to remain at wildlife sightings and when to return to camp.

Shared Group Safari

A shared safari offers a more affordable way to visit the Serengeti. You travel with other guests in a safari vehicle, usually following a fixed route and schedule.

Our shared safaris use specially designed 4×4 Land Cruisers and provide window seats for participants. Because group itineraries need to coordinate several travelers, shared safaris generally have less flexibility than private tours.

Northern Serengeti and Ndutu itineraries are usually better arranged privately because they involve long distances, seasonal camps and specialized routing.

Serengeti Accommodation Options

Budget Camping

Budget camping is ideal for adventurous travelers who want to experience the sounds and atmosphere of the African wilderness.

Equipment typically includes:

  • Safari tent
  • Mattress
  • Sleeping bag
  • Pillow
  • Camping table and chairs
  • Meals prepared by a safari chef

Public campsites normally have shared bathroom and toilet facilities. Hot water and electricity may be limited.

Mid-Range Tented Camps

Mid-range camps provide greater comfort while preserving the feeling of being close to nature. Rooms usually feature permanent beds, private bathrooms and comfortable furnishings.

Many camps have dining areas, lounges, solar-powered electricity and limited Wi-Fi.

Luxury Lodges and Camps

Luxury accommodations may offer spacious suites, premium dining, swimming pools, private decks, excellent service and impressive locations.

Some properties are permanent, while mobile migration camps move or operate seasonally near important wildlife areas.

What Is Included?

A standard Serengeti safari package may include:

  • Private or shared 4×4 safari vehicle
  • Professional English-speaking safari guide
  • Park and conservation fees
  • Crater service fee
  • Accommodation during the safari
  • Meals specified in the itinerary
  • Drinking water during game drives
  • Airport or hotel transfers as agreed
  • Government taxes
  • Game drives mentioned in the program

Exact inclusions should always be listed clearly in your final quotation.

What Is Usually Excluded?

Items commonly excluded are:

  • International flights
  • Visa expenses
  • Travel and medical insurance
  • Personal purchases
  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Guide and staff gratuities
  • Optional activities
  • Vaccinations and medical expenses
  • Items not specifically mentioned in the itinerary

Optional Serengeti Activities

Hot-Air Balloon Safari

A balloon flight provides a unique view of the plains at sunrise. After landing, guests normally enjoy a celebratory breakfast.

Balloon flights must be booked in advance, especially during migration season.

Maasai Cultural Visit

A cultural visit can introduce travelers to Maasai traditions and community life. Choose respectful experiences that benefit the host community.

Olduvai Gorge

Olduvai Gorge is an important archaeological site between the Serengeti and Ngorongoro. It can be added to selected private itineraries.

Zanzibar Beach Extension

After several days of game drives, Zanzibar is an excellent destination for relaxation. A combined safari and beach package can include domestic flights, airport transfers, accommodation and selected island activities.

Safari Vehicle and Guide

Your safari vehicle strongly influences the comfort and quality of the experience. A properly equipped 4×4 Land Cruiser should include:

  • Pop-up roof for wildlife viewing
  • Window seats
  • Charging ports
  • Cooler or refrigerator
  • First-aid equipment
  • Radio communication
  • Seatbelts
  • Storage for luggage

An experienced guide does much more than drive. Your guide tracks animals, explains their behavior, interprets the landscape and helps position the vehicle safely for photography.

What to Pack

Pack light and use a soft-sided travel bag whenever possible.

Recommended items include:

  • Neutral-colored, lightweight clothing
  • Warm jacket or fleece
  • Comfortable closed shoes
  • Sun hat
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera and spare batteries
  • Power bank
  • Binoculars
  • Personal medication
  • Passport and travel documents
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Small day backpack

Morning and evening temperatures can be cold, particularly around Ngorongoro. Layered clothing is the most practical choice.

Serengeti Safari Planning Tips

Spend at Least Two Full Days in the Serengeti

The park is too large to appreciate during a rushed visit. Two full days significantly improve your wildlife-viewing opportunities.

Match Your Route to the Season

If migration viewing is your priority, select your accommodation according to the expected herd location. Remember that wildlife movements are natural and cannot be guaranteed.

Book Early for Peak Season

July through October and January through February are popular periods. Northern Serengeti, Ndutu and crater-rim accommodations can sell out months in advance.

Do Not Overload the Itinerary

Adding too many parks can result in long daily drives. A well-paced itinerary often provides a better experience than a longer list of destinations.

Consider Flying One Way

Travelers with limited time can fly between Arusha, Zanzibar and Serengeti airstrips. A fly-in or fly-out arrangement reduces driving time but increases the overall cost.

Arrange Suitable Travel Insurance

Travel insurance should cover medical emergencies, trip interruption, luggage problems and safari activities. Review the policy carefully before traveling.
