Which Tanzania Safari Itinerary Is Best for You?
The best itinerary gives you enough time to enjoy each destination while keeping travel days manageable. Adding more parks does not always improve a safari; spending longer in a few carefully chosen locations can create a more rewarding experience.
| Your travel priorities | Suggested itinerary |
|---|---|
| A short wildlife holiday | 3–4 safari days, focusing on selected Northern Circuit parks |
| A balanced first safari | 5 safari days covering Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro |
| More time for photography | 6–8 safari days with additional Serengeti nights |
| A honeymoon | A private lodge safari with an optional Zanzibar extension |
| A family holiday | A private itinerary with a comfortable pace and suitable rooms |
| A migration-focused trip | A private route planned around your dates and the relevant Serengeti region |
These are starting points. Your final route should reflect your arrival time, departure arrangements and the experiences that matter most to you.
Our Suggested Five-Day Tanzania Safari Itinerary
This private safari itinerary combines three major wildlife destinations and includes two nights in the Serengeti. Plan to arrive in Arusha the day before your safari so you can rest before departure.
Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire National Park
Begin your journey with a drive from Arusha to Tarangire for a game drive. Tarangire is particularly associated with elephant families and the ancient baobab trees that shape its landscape. Tarangire National Park
Enjoy lunch during your park visit and continue exploring before travelling to your accommodation near the park or in the Karatu area.
Overnight: Lodge, tented accommodation or campsite, depending on your package.
Day 2: Travel to Serengeti National Park
After breakfast, travel towards the Serengeti through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. This is a substantial travel day, so the itinerary should allow time for the journey, entrance procedures and stops.
Once you enter the Serengeti, enjoy wildlife viewing as you make your way towards your accommodation. The amount of afternoon game-drive time depends on your departure time and road conditions.
Overnight: Central Serengeti.
Day 3: Full Day in the Serengeti
Spend the day exploring the Serengeti with your guide. With a full day available, you have more time to follow wildlife activity and enjoy different areas without moving accommodation.
Your guide will plan the drive according to local conditions and recent sightings. Wildlife encounters are unpredictable, and no particular animal sighting can be guaranteed.
An optional balloon safari may be arranged in advance, subject to availability and operating conditions.
Overnight: Central Serengeti.
Day 4: Serengeti to Ngorongoro
Enjoy a morning game drive before beginning the journey towards Ngorongoro. Your departure time will depend on the location of your accommodation, park-entry arrangements and your next overnight stop.
Spend the evening relaxing before your crater visit the following morning.
Overnight: Ngorongoro area or Karatu, depending on your accommodation choice.
Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater and Return to Arusha
Depart early for your Ngorongoro Crater game drive. After exploring the crater and enjoying lunch, travel back towards Arusha.
If you would like to fly to Zanzibar or depart internationally that evening, tell us before booking. We will check whether your flight timing works with the safari route and airport transfer.
End of safari: Arusha, or an agreed airport drop-off.
Choose Your Safari Style
Shared Group Safari
A shared safari is a practical option for travellers who want to share vehicle costs and meet other guests.
Kilipath African Safaris’ shared vehicles carry a maximum of seven guests, with a window seat for each traveller. Shared departures follow a set itinerary, so accommodation, timing and routing are less flexible.
Our standard shared routes include one night in the Serengeti. If you want two Serengeti nights or a route into Northern Serengeti or Ndutu, ask for a private safari.
Private Safari
A private safari gives your party a dedicated vehicle and guide. It is suitable for couples, families, friends and travellers who want more control over their schedule.
We can tailor a private route around additional Serengeti nights, preferred lodges, photography interests and airport connections. Guides speaking other languages may be requested, subject to availability.
Accommodation Options
Your accommodation affects both the cost and the daily flow of your safari. A well-positioned camp or lodge can reduce travel and make early departures easier.
| Accommodation style | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Budget camping | Tents and camping equipment, with shared campsite bathrooms |
| Mid-range lodges | Comfortable rooms, usually with private bathrooms |
| Tented camps | A safari atmosphere with facilities that vary by property |
| Luxury accommodation | Higher levels of comfort, service and amenities |
For camping safaris, Kilipath African Safaris provides tents, mattresses, sleeping bags and pillows. Tell us your preferred comfort level so we can recommend suitable properties.
