Suggested 7-Day Tanzania Wildlife Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Arusha

Welcome to Tanzania. A representative will meet you at Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha Airport and transfer you to your hotel.

Depending on your arrival time, you can relax at the property or explore Arusha. Optional activities include a city tour, local coffee experience or a visit to a cultural heritage centre.

Your safari consultant or guide will meet you for a short briefing and confirm the following day’s departure time. This is also an opportunity to discuss your wildlife interests, photography priorities and dietary requirements.

Day 2: Arusha to Tarangire National Park

After breakfast, meet your private guide and travel to Tarangire National Park. The drive usually takes approximately two hours, depending on your hotel and road conditions.

Tarangire is famous for its large elephant population, ancient baobab trees and beautiful seasonal landscapes. During the dry months, animals gather around the Tarangire River, creating excellent opportunities to see elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest and buffalo.

The park is also home to lions, leopards, cheetahs and hundreds of bird species. Because this is a private safari, your guide can adjust the game drive around your interests. Wildlife photographers can spend additional time at promising sightings without following a fixed group schedule.

Enjoy lunch inside the park before continuing your afternoon game drive. Later, travel to your lodge for dinner and a peaceful evening.

Day 3: Tarangire to Serengeti National Park

After breakfast, travel toward Serengeti National Park through the beautiful Ngorongoro Highlands. The scenery changes dramatically as forested hills open onto Tanzania’s seemingly endless grasslands.

You may stop at a viewpoint overlooking the Ngorongoro Crater before continuing toward the Serengeti. An optional Maasai cultural visit or Olduvai Gorge excursion can be arranged in advance.

Enter Serengeti National Park and begin your first game drive while travelling toward the camp. The Serengeti supports an extraordinary variety of wildlife, including lions, elephants, giraffes, buffalo, cheetahs, leopards, hyenas and numerous antelope species.

Arrive at your camp in the late afternoon. Enjoy a refreshing drink and watch the changing colours of the plains before dinner.

Day 4: Full-Day Serengeti Wildlife Safari

Begin early when temperatures are cooler and wildlife is especially active. Sunrise in the Serengeti is one of the most memorable moments of any Tanzania safari.

Your guide will use experience, fresh tracks and radio communication to locate wildlife. You may find lions returning from a night hunt, cheetahs scanning the grasslands or elephants moving quietly between woodland and water.

The day remains flexible. You can return to camp for lunch and relaxation or take a packed meal and spend the entire day exploring. Guests interested in photography can request extra time at sightings, while honeymooners and couples may prefer a slower schedule with a private bush breakfast or sundowner.

The Serengeti experience changes throughout the year. The Great Migration moves through different regions according to rainfall and grazing conditions:

• December to April: Calving season in the southern plains and Ndutu region
• May to June: Herds move through the western and central areas
• July to October: Northern Serengeti and Mara River crossing season
• November: Herds generally begin moving south again

Migration movements cannot be guaranteed because they depend on nature and rainfall. However, the Serengeti offers outstanding resident wildlife throughout the year.

Day 5: Another Day in the Serengeti

A second full day allows you to explore the Serengeti without rushing. Your guide can take you to a different habitat or return to an area where interesting animal activity was observed the previous day.

The central Serengeti is particularly well known for its resident big cats. Rocky kopjes provide excellent resting and observation points for lions, while river valleys and woodland areas create suitable habitat for leopards.

For an unforgettable addition, begin the morning with a hot-air balloon flight over the plains. After landing, enjoy a celebratory breakfast in the bush before meeting your safari guide.

Other possibilities include a private bush meal, a romantic camp arrangement or a special photography-focused game drive.

After the day’s exploration, return to camp for dinner beneath the African sky.

Day 6: Serengeti to Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Enjoy a final morning game drive in the Serengeti. Early departures may provide another opportunity to observe predators and other animals before daytime temperatures rise.

After the game drive, continue toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The route offers beautiful views and wildlife sightings along the way. Your lodge may be located near the crater rim or in the Karatu highlands, depending on your chosen accommodation category and availability.

A crater-rim lodge provides dramatic views and convenient access for the following morning’s descent. Karatu properties generally offer larger gardens, relaxing surroundings and excellent value.

Spend the evening enjoying the lodge, reviewing photographs and preparing for your final safari day.

Day 7: Ngorongoro Crater Safari and Return to Arusha

After an early breakfast, descend approximately 600 metres into the Ngorongoro Crater. This UNESCO-listed conservation area contains one of Africa’s greatest concentrations of wildlife within a naturally enclosed landscape.

The crater floor includes open grassland, woodland, freshwater areas and seasonal marshes. Animals commonly seen include lions, elephants, buffalo, zebras, wildebeest, hippos and several species of antelope.

Ngorongoro is also one of Tanzania’s best places to search for the critically endangered black rhinoceros. Sightings are never guaranteed, but your guide will carefully scan the crater floor and distant grasslands.

Enjoy lunch at a designated picnic area before beginning the journey back to Arusha. You can be transferred to your hotel, Arusha Airport or Kilimanjaro International Airport, depending on your onward travel arrangements.
