Recommended 4-Day Group Serengeti Safari Itinerary

This four-day itinerary is one of the most popular group safari packages in Tanzania. It includes Tarangire National Park, Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater.

Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire National Park

Your group Serengeti safari itinerary begins with an early morning pickup from your hotel in Arusha. After meeting your guide and fellow travelers, you will drive toward Tarangire National Park.

The journey from Arusha to Tarangire normally takes approximately two hours. After registration at the park entrance, you will begin your first game drive.

Tarangire National Park is famous for its ancient baobab trees, large elephant populations and beautiful landscapes. The Tarangire River attracts many animals, especially during the dry season.

Wildlife you may encounter includes:

  • African elephants
  • Lions
  • Giraffes
  • Zebras
  • Wildebeest
  • Buffaloes
  • Warthogs
  • Impalas
  • Baboons
  • Different species of antelope

Tarangire is also home to hundreds of bird species, making it an excellent destination for birdwatchers.

You will enjoy lunch inside the park before continuing with an afternoon game drive. Later, you will drive to your campsite or lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

Accommodation: Public campsite, tented camp or lodge
Meals: Lunch and dinner

Day 2: Tarangire Area to Serengeti National Park

After breakfast, you will begin the journey toward Serengeti National Park. The drive takes you through the beautiful landscapes of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

You may stop at a viewpoint overlooking the Ngorongoro Crater before continuing toward the Serengeti. As you descend onto the plains, the landscape opens into the famous grasslands for which Serengeti is known.

The name Serengeti originates from a Maasai word meaning “endless plains.” The national park covers approximately 14,750 square kilometres and protects an extraordinary variety of wildlife.

After entering Serengeti National Park, you will enjoy a game drive toward Central Serengeti. This region, also known as Seronera, is one of the best areas for year-round wildlife viewing.

Central Serengeti contains permanent water sources that attract animals throughout the year. It is particularly famous for its population of big cats.

During your game drive, you may see:

  • Lions
  • Leopards
  • Cheetahs
  • Elephants
  • Giraffes
  • Buffaloes
  • Hippos
  • Hyenas
  • Crocodiles
  • Zebras and wildebeest

You will arrive at your campsite or lodge in the evening for dinner and relaxation.

Accommodation: Serengeti campsite or lodge
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 3: Serengeti Game Drive to Ngorongoro Area

Wake up early and prepare for another exciting game drive across the Serengeti plains. Early mornings are excellent for observing predators because lions, leopards, cheetahs and hyenas are often active before temperatures rise.

After breakfast, you will continue exploring Central Serengeti. Your guide will communicate with other guides by radio to locate interesting wildlife sightings while ensuring that your safari remains respectful and safe.

The Serengeti is famous for the Great Wildebeest Migration. However, the animals move throughout the ecosystem according to rainfall and fresh grazing conditions. Therefore, migration sightings depend on the month and location of your safari.

Central Serengeti remains rewarding throughout the year, even when the largest migration herds are in another region. Its resident wildlife includes elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, lions, leopards and many antelope species.

After lunch and a final game drive, you will travel toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. You will arrive at your campsite or lodge near the crater in the evening.

The Ngorongoro highlands can become cold, especially during the evening and early morning. Travelers should carry a warm jacket.

Accommodation: Campsite or lodge near Ngorongoro
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 4: Ngorongoro Crater to Arusha

After an early breakfast, you will descend approximately 600 metres into the Ngorongoro Crater for a remarkable game drive.

The crater is one of Africa’s most famous wildlife destinations. Its fertile floor, permanent water sources and natural protection support a large concentration of animals.

Animals frequently observed inside the crater include:

  • Lions
  • Elephants
  • Buffaloes
  • Hippos
  • Zebras
  • Wildebeest
  • Hyenas
  • Jackals
  • Warthogs
  • Gazelles
  • Black rhinoceros

The Ngorongoro Crater is one of the best places in Tanzania to search for the endangered black rhinoceros. Nevertheless, wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed because all animals move freely in their natural environment.

You will stop for lunch at a designated picnic area before continuing with your game drive. In the afternoon, you will ascend from the crater and drive back to Arusha.

Arrival in Arusha is usually between approximately 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., depending on road conditions, weather and wildlife-viewing time.

Accommodation: Not included unless requested
Meals: Breakfast and lunch

Alternative 3-Day Group Serengeti Safari Itinerary

Travelers with limited time can select a three-day Serengeti and Ngorongoro group safari.

Day 1: Arusha to Serengeti

Depart from Arusha early in the morning and drive through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area toward Serengeti National Park. Enjoy an afternoon game drive in Central Serengeti before proceeding to your accommodation.

Day 2: Serengeti to Ngorongoro

Enjoy an early Serengeti game drive followed by breakfast and additional wildlife viewing. In the afternoon, travel toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 3: Ngorongoro Crater to Arusha

Descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a half-day game drive. After lunch, return to Arusha, arriving in the early evening.

The three-day itinerary is suitable for travelers who want to experience Serengeti and Ngorongoro within a shorter period. However, the driving distances are long, so the four-day package provides a more relaxed experience.

Camping Versus Lodge Group Safari

Group Camping Safari

A camping safari is ideal for adventurous travelers looking for the most affordable option. Guests sleep in public campsites located inside or near the national parks.

Camping equipment generally includes a tent, sleeping mattress, sleeping bag and pillow. A safari chef prepares meals, while bathrooms and showers are shared with other campsite guests.

Camping provides a close connection to nature. You may hear lions, hyenas or other wildlife during the night, although campsites follow established safety procedures.

Group Lodge Safari

A lodge group safari offers greater comfort and normally includes a private room, bed, private bathroom and hot shower. Accommodation may consist of lodges or permanent tented camps.

A lodge package costs more than camping because room prices are added to the shared vehicle and guiding costs. It is a suitable choice for couples, honeymooners, families and travelers who prefer private facilities.

Best Time for a Group Serengeti Safari

Serengeti National Park can be visited throughout the year. Each season offers a different wildlife experience.

January to March

Large wildebeest herds are commonly found around Southern Serengeti and Ndutu during the calving season. Thousands of calves are born, attracting predators such as lions, cheetahs and hyenas.

Standard shared safaris may have route limitations, so travelers specifically interested in Ndutu should confirm the route before booking.

April and May

These months form part of the green season. The landscape becomes lush, visitor numbers may be lower, and photography conditions can be beautiful. Heavy rain may affect some roads, but wildlife viewing remains possible.

June

The dry season begins, and animals increasingly gather around permanent water sources. Migration herds may move through the western areas of the Serengeti ecosystem.

July to October

These months are popular because of the dry weather and excellent wildlife viewing. The migration often reaches Northern Serengeti, where river crossings may occur.

Regular group-joining safaris usually visit Central Serengeti and may not travel to the far north. A private safari is recommended for travelers whose main priority is seeing the Mara River crossing.

November and December

Short rains bring fresh grass to the plains. Migration herds begin moving south again, while resident wildlife remains abundant in Central Serengeti.

Because wildlife movements depend on natural rainfall patterns, the exact location of the migration cannot be guaranteed.

Safari Vehicle and Group Size

Our shared safaris use customized 4×4 Land Cruisers designed for Tanzania’s national parks. Vehicles normally include:

  • Pop-up roof for wildlife viewing
  • Window seat for every traveler
  • Charging sockets or USB ports
  • Cooler or small refrigerator
  • Seatbelts
  • First-aid kit
  • Radio communication
  • Storage space for soft luggage

A group safari has a maximum of seven travelers. Guests may come from different countries, making the journey a social and enjoyable experience.

Travelers carrying large suitcases can usually store unnecessary luggage securely in Arusha and take a smaller soft bag on safari.

How Much Does a Group Serengeti Safari Cost?

The price of a group Serengeti safari itinerary depends on:

  • Number of safari days
  • Camping or lodge accommodation
  • Travel season
  • National parks included
  • Accommodation before and after the safari
  • Airport transfers
  • Domestic flights
  • Optional activities
  • Single-room supplement

Camping safaris are generally the most affordable, while lodge packages offer greater comfort at a higher price.

Request a personalized quotation with your travel dates, number of travelers, accommodation preference and pickup location. We will recommend the most suitable available departure.

Important Safari Information

Group Departure Time

Shared safaris usually depart from Arusha early in the morning. Travelers should arrive in Arusha at least one day before departure. Arriving on the same morning may create a risk of missing the group, particularly if a flight is delayed.

Safari Luggage

We recommend bringing a soft-sided travel bag instead of a large hard-shell suitcase. Space inside shared safari vehicles is limited.

Clothing

Pack lightweight neutral-colored clothing, comfortable shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen and a sun hat. You should also carry a warm jacket for cold mornings and evenings around Ngorongoro.

Photography

Bring extra batteries, memory cards and a suitable camera lens. Charging facilities may be available in the vehicle and at some accommodations, but electricity can occasionally be limited.

Health and Insurance

Consult your medical professional regarding recommended vaccinations and malaria prevention. Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly advised.

Optional Safari Activities

Your group Serengeti safari itinerary can be combined with additional experiences before or after the main safari, including:

  • Serengeti hot-air balloon safari
  • Maasai cultural visit
  • Materuni Waterfalls tour
  • Coffee experience near Moshi
  • Arusha city tour
  • Lake Manyara safari
  • Zanzibar beach holiday
  • Mount Kilimanjaro day hike
  • Airport transfers
  • Additional accommodation in Arusha

Some activities require advance reservations and are subject to availability.
