Why Combine Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater?
A combined safari brings together contrasting landscapes and game-drive experiences.
Serengeti offers expansive plains, varied habitats, and opportunities to explore different wildlife areas over several days. Its ecosystem supports the Great Migration, although the location of the herds changes throughout the year.
Ngorongoro adds dramatic highland scenery and a game drive inside a vast volcanic caldera. The crater is the best-known attraction within the wider Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
Combining these destinations gives your safari variety: time to explore the Serengeti, followed by a crater visit before returning toward Arusha.
Choose Your Safari Style
Shared Camping Safari
A shared safari is a practical option for solo travelers, couples, and friends who enjoy meeting other travelers and sharing vehicle costs.
On Kilipath’s shared safaris, you travel in a 4×4 Land Cruiser with a maximum of seven guests and a guaranteed window seat. An English-speaking guide leads the journey, while camping equipment and a chef are provided for camping itineraries.
Public campsites have shared toilets and showers. Your quotation will explain the overnight locations and the equipment included.
Shared departures follow a set route and timetable. If you want more time in Serengeti or a route focused on a particular migration area, ask us about a private safari.
Private Lodge or Tented-Camp Safari
A private safari provides a dedicated vehicle and guide for your party. It allows more flexibility when choosing your route, accommodation, and time spent in each destination.
This option suits couples, families, photographers, and travelers who want to shape the journey around their own interests.
Accommodation can include lodges or tented camps with private bathrooms. The final selection depends on your budget, travel dates, and room availability.

Suggested 4-Day Private Serengeti and Ngorongoro Itinerary
The following itinerary is a starting point for a private safari. We can adjust it to suit your arrival arrangements and preferred pace.
| Day | Safari plan | Suggested overnight area |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Depart Arusha and travel toward Serengeti, with an afternoon game drive if arrival time allows | Central Serengeti |
| 2 | Explore Serengeti on game drives, with a picnic lunch or meal arrangements suited to your accommodation | Central Serengeti |
| 3 | Enjoy a morning game drive before traveling toward Ngorongoro | Ngorongoro area or Karatu |
| 4 | Descend into Ngorongoro Crater for a game drive, then return to Arusha | End of safari |
Day 1: Arusha to Serengeti
Meet your guide and begin the overland journey toward Serengeti. This is a substantial travel day, so an early departure helps make the most of the available time.
Depending on road conditions and arrival time, enjoy an afternoon game drive before checking into your camp or lodge.
Day 2: Explore Serengeti
Spend the day exploring with your guide. The route will depend on wildlife activity, your overnight location, and the areas accessible within your itinerary.
A full day gives you more time to observe animal behavior, enjoy the scenery, and pause for photography. Wildlife sightings remain unpredictable, which is part of the experience.
Day 3: Serengeti to the Ngorongoro Area
Enjoy a morning game drive before continuing toward your next accommodation.
Staying near Ngorongoro prepares you for the following day’s crater visit. Your consultant will explain the differences between accommodation in Karatu and options within the conservation area.
Day 4: Ngorongoro Crater and Return to Arusha
After breakfast, travel to the crater and descend for a guided game drive. Explore the landscape before beginning your return journey to Arusha.
If you plan to fly onward that evening, share your flight details before booking so we can assess the transfer schedule.
How Many Days Should You Book?
The right duration depends on how much time you want for wildlife viewing and how comfortable you are with long road journeys.
- Three days: A compact option with significant travel time.
- Four days: Allows more Serengeti time before the crater visit.
- Five or six days: Creates room for a slower private itinerary or an additional destination such as Tarangire.
Check the overnight locations carefully when comparing packages. Two safaris with the same duration may offer very different amounts of time inside Serengeti.
Planning a Great Migration Safari
If the Great Migration is your priority, tell us before we prepare your itinerary. Accommodation location and the number of safari days become especially important.
The migration moves through the wider Serengeti ecosystem, so a Central Serengeti itinerary should not be assumed to include the herds or a river crossing. We will discuss the route that best fits your dates and interests.
River crossings and other wildlife events cannot be guaranteed.
Accommodation Options
Budget Camping
Camping suits travelers who prefer a simple outdoor experience and want to manage accommodation costs. Kilipath provides tents, mattresses, sleeping bags, and pillows on its camping safaris.
Facilities at public campsites are shared.
Comfortable Lodges and Tented Camps
For greater comfort, choose accommodation with proper beds and private bathrooms. Tented camps combine canvas surroundings with facilities that differ considerably from public camping.
Ask us to include the proposed property names and room types in your quotation so you know what to expect.
What Determines the Safari Price?
Your Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti safari price depends on:
- Travel dates and number of safari days.
- Number of travelers sharing the vehicle.
- Shared or private arrangements.
- Accommodation category and location.
- Park access, crater arrangements, and overnight fees.
- Airport transfers, domestic flights, and optional activities.
We prepare quotations around your actual requirements rather than applying one price to every traveler.

What Will Your Quotation Include?
Your written quotation will confirm the services included in your package. These may cover safari transport, a guide, scheduled game drives, park fees, accommodation, meals, and drinking water.
For camping itineraries, it will also specify camping equipment and chef services.
Check the arrangements for airport transfers, flights, tips, insurance, visas, and optional activities. These should be clearly stated before you confirm your booking.
Preparing for Your Safari
Pack comfortable clothing, sun protection, suitable shoes, and a warm layer for cool mornings and evenings. A camera, spare batteries, and a small day bag are useful for game drives.
For an overland safari, keep your main luggage manageable. If you are returning to Arusha, ask about storing larger bags during the trip. If your itinerary includes a domestic flight, confirm the baggage allowance for your particular ticket.
Share dietary requirements and allergies before departure so the team can plan meals.
