What Is Tanzania’s Northern Circuit?
Tanzania’s Northern Circuit is the safari region connecting Arusha with Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara National Park, Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. These destinations can be combined into a journey featuring savannah, woodland, lakes and volcanic highlands. site.tanzaniatourism.go.tz
You do not need to visit every park. A carefully paced itinerary with fewer destinations can provide more time for wildlife viewing and less time traveling between overnight stops.
Best Places to Visit
Serengeti National Park
The Serengeti offers expansive landscapes and opportunities to search for lions, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes and other wildlife. It is also central to the Great Migration, although the herds’ location changes with rainfall and grazing conditions.
For a private itinerary, spending at least two nights here gives you a full day to explore without transferring accommodation. Migration-focused trips require accommodation in the appropriate region; a Central Serengeti stay does not automatically include access to distant northern migration areas.
Ngorongoro Crater
Descend from the highlands onto the crater floor for a game drive through grassland, wetlands and woodland. Wildlife you may encounter includes buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos and lions, with a possibility of seeing black rhino.
Ngorongoro adds a distinctive landscape to your safari, but sightings of individual species are never guaranteed.
Tarangire National Park
Tarangire is known for elephants, baobab trees and varied scenery. It makes an appealing first stop from Arusha, giving travelers an introduction to safari before continuing toward the Serengeti and Ngorongoro.
Lake Manyara National Park
Lake Manyara adds forest, lakeside scenery and birdwatching to a longer itinerary. Include it when you have enough time to enjoy the extra stop without shortening your Serengeti stay.
Suggested Six-Day Northern Circuit Tanzania Safari
This sample private safari itinerary balances three major destinations with time to explore.
| Day | Plan | Overnight area |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Depart Arusha for a Tarangire game drive | Karatu or nearby |
| 2 | Travel through the Ngorongoro highlands to Serengeti, with wildlife viewing as time allows | Central Serengeti |
| 3 | Full day exploring Serengeti | Central Serengeti |
| 4 | Further Serengeti wildlife viewing, then transfer toward Ngorongoro | Ngorongoro area |
| 5 | Ngorongoro Crater game drive | Karatu |
| 6 | Return to Arusha, or add Lake Manyara if departure arrangements allow | Onward travel |
Accommodation locations affect driving time and the daily schedule. We adjust the route before confirming your booking.
How Many Days Do You Need?
A four-day safari can combine Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro, although it involves substantial driving. Five to six days allow a more comfortable pace.
For migration-focused travel, extra Serengeti nights or additional activities, consider seven days or longer. Northern Serengeti and Ndutu extensions require careful routing and are arranged as private safaris through Kilipath.
Shared or Private Safari?
Shared safaris suit travelers who want to share vehicle costs and meet other visitors. Kilipath shared departures accommodate a maximum of seven guests in a safari vehicle, with a window seat for each traveler. Routes and departure schedules are fixed.
Private safaris provide a dedicated vehicle and guide for your party. They offer greater flexibility over accommodation, daily timing and the areas visited, making them suitable for families, couples and photographers.
Accommodation and Safari Costs
Choose public camping for a simple outdoor experience, lodges for comfortable rooms, or tented camps with proper beds and private bathrooms.
Your Northern Circuit Tanzania safari price depends on:
- Travel dates and number of travelers.
- Safari length and destinations.
- Shared or private vehicle arrangements.
- Accommodation category and location.
- Flights, transfers and optional activities.
Request an itemized quotation so you can compare the complete experience. Confirm whether park fees, crater access, accommodation, meals, drinking water and airport transfers are included.
