A safari planned around photography

Photography often requires patience. A lion may become active after resting, an elephant family may move into an interesting composition, or changing cloud cover may transform a landscape.

A private safari allows you to discuss these priorities with your guide and spend more time at suitable sightings. Daily plans remain subject to park opening hours, road conditions and wildlife behaviour.

Before booking, tell us whether your interests include big cats, elephants, birds, landscapes or migration scenes. We can use those priorities to shape your route and overnight locations. If you want photography instruction, request a specialist photographic guide or workshop leader separately so availability and costs can be confirmed.

Destinations for your photography safari

Tarangire National Park

Tarangire offers striking combinations of elephants, baobab trees and river landscapes. Tanzania National Parks highlights elephant families beneath ancient baobabs and the Tarangire River’s importance in concentrating wildlife during the dry season. These settings offer opportunities for both close wildlife portraits and wider environmental photographs. Tarangire National Park

Serengeti National Park

The Serengeti section gives you several days to explore one area without changing accommodation every night. Your guide can plan drives around recent sightings and your interests, while leaving time to photograph the landscape as well as wildlife.

For a migration-focused trip, the overnight locations should match the season. A Central Serengeti itinerary should not be sold as a guaranteed northern river-crossing safari.

Ngorongoro Crater

Ngorongoro adds a different landscape to your collection, with crater views and wildlife photography during your descent and game drive. Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro form an established northern Tanzania safari combination. site.tanzaniatourism.go.tz

Suggested 7-day photography Tanzania safari itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Arusha

Arrive and transfer to your accommodation according to your confirmed booking. Meet your safari team for a briefing and discuss your equipment, preferred subjects and expectations.

Day 2: Arusha to Tarangire National Park

Travel to Tarangire for a game drive, looking for elephant families, baobab compositions and other wildlife encounters. Continue to your selected accommodation after the drive.

Day 3: Travel to Central Serengeti

Drive through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area toward the Serengeti. This is a substantial travel day, with photographic stops where practical and an afternoon game drive if arrival time allows.

Day 4: Full day in the Serengeti

Explore with your private guide. Arrange an early departure within permitted hours and discuss whether you prefer a full-day drive with a packed lunch or a return to camp between outings.

Day 5: Another full day in the Serengeti

Use a second full day to revisit productive areas, follow different subjects and build a more varied collection. Having additional time reduces the pressure to capture everything during one outing.

Day 6: Serengeti to the Ngorongoro area

Enjoy a morning game drive before travelling toward your accommodation near Ngorongoro. Arrival time and conditions determine whether additional scenic stops are practical.

Day 7: Ngorongoro Crater and return to Arusha

Descend for a crater game drive, then return to Arusha. Any onward flight should be coordinated with the expected driving time before tickets are booked.

When should you travel?

Choose your dates around your photographic goals.

For southern Serengeti and Ndutu calving photography, January to mid-March is a useful planning window. Northern Serengeti river-crossing itineraries are commonly planned between July and October. These are seasonal guides: rainfall affects herd movements, and crossings cannot be guaranteed. A migration camp operator that works in both regions identifies these same broad windows. Asilia Africa

If migration is your main priority, request a revised route with enough nights in the relevant region rather than adding it to an already busy itinerary.

Accommodation options

Your accommodation affects both comfort and the time spent driving to photographic areas.

  • Camping: A budget option with supplied camping equipment and shared campsite facilities.
  • Mid-range lodges and tented camps: Comfortable rooms or tents with private bathroom facilities.
  • Luxury camps and lodges: Upgraded accommodation and service, subject to availability.

Your quotation should name each property, room type and meal arrangement so you can review the complete package before booking.

What your quotation should include

Ask for a clear, itemized confirmation covering:

  • Private safari vehicle and guide.
  • Scheduled game drives and applicable park fees.
  • Accommodation and specified meals.
  • Drinking water during safari.
  • Agreed airport or hotel transfers.
  • Camping equipment and chef services, where applicable.

Flights, tips, insurance, balloon safaris, specialist photography tuition and extra hotel nights should be clearly identified as included or excluded.

Photography equipment to bring

Bring a camera you know well, a telephoto lens for wildlife and a wider lens for landscapes. Spare batteries, memory cards, lens cloths and a dust-resistant camera bag are useful on long game drives.

A beanbag can help support your camera against the vehicle. Confirm charging arrangements before travelling, and keep essential equipment accessible during drives.

Photograph wildlife from permitted locations, follow your guide’s instructions and allow animals space. Ask permission before photographing people.
