Discover wild, peaceful, and authentic Tanzania with our carefully designed Ruaha Safari Southern Circuit Packages. Ruaha National Park is famous for its large elephant populations, powerful lion prides, rare wild dogs, dramatic landscapes, and uncrowded game-viewing experiences.
Unlike Tanzania’s busier Northern Circuit, the Southern Circuit offers greater privacy and a genuine wilderness atmosphere. Our packages can combine Ruaha National Park with Nyerere National Park, Mikumi National Park, Udzungwa Mountains, or a relaxing Zanzibar beach holiday.
Why Choose a Ruaha Safari?
Ruaha National Park is an excellent destination for travelers who want spectacular wildlife without large numbers of safari vehicles. Covering more than 20,000 square kilometres, it is Tanzania’s largest national park and one of East Africa’s most important wilderness areas.
The Great Ruaha River attracts animals during the dry season, creating rewarding game-viewing opportunities. Visitors may encounter elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, greater kudus, sable antelopes, and African wild dogs.
A Ruaha safari is especially suitable for:
- Couples seeking a private safari
- Honeymooners looking for remote luxury
- Wildlife photographers
- Families interested in an exclusive adventure
- Returning safari travelers
- Visitors combining Tanzania’s mainland with Zanzibar

Sample 5-Day Ruaha Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival and Transfer to Ruaha
Your Southern Tanzania safari begins with a pickup from your hotel, airport, or an agreed location. Depending on your selected package, you will travel by road or take a domestic flight to Ruaha.
After arriving and completing the park-entry formalities, enjoy your first game drive. Your guide will introduce you to the park’s wildlife, vegetation, and ecosystem. Later, continue to your lodge or tented camp for dinner and overnight.
Day 2: Full-Day Ruaha Game Drive
After breakfast, depart for a full day of wildlife viewing. Explore the Great Ruaha River, seasonal watercourses, baobab woodlands, and open plains.
Elephants are commonly encountered, while lions may be seen resting near the river or following buffalo herds. Your guide will look for fresh tracks and listen for animal alarm calls to locate predators.
Lunch may be served at a picnic area or provided by your accommodation. Continue your game drive in the afternoon before returning for dinner.
Day 3: Predator and Elephant Safari
Begin early when wildlife is most active. Ruaha is known for its large lion prides and significant elephant population. You may also encounter leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, jackals, and African wild dogs.
Because the park receives fewer visitors than many famous safari destinations, sightings are often peaceful and intimate. Photographers have more freedom to observe wildlife and choose suitable positions.
Day 4: Explore Remote Ruaha
Travel into a different section of Ruaha to discover new landscapes and wildlife habitats. Depending on seasonal conditions, your guide may explore areas around the Mwagusi River, Jongomero, or other productive wildlife zones.
An optional walking safari may be arranged through selected camps. Accompanied by a qualified guide, a walking safari introduces you to animal tracks, plants, insects, birds, and the smaller details of the ecosystem.
Day 5: Final Game Drive and Departure
Enjoy breakfast followed by a final game drive. This is another opportunity to search for any wildlife you may not have encountered earlier.
You will then leave Ruaha and continue to Iringa, Dar es Salaam, another Southern Circuit destination, or the airstrip for your onward flight.
Wildlife in Ruaha National Park
Ruaha supports an exceptional variety of animals because it lies where Eastern and Southern African ecosystems meet.
Animals frequently seen include:
- African elephants
- Lions
- Leopards
- Cheetahs
- African wild dogs
- Spotted hyenas
- Buffaloes
- Giraffes
- Zebras
- Greater and lesser kudus
- Sable and roan antelopes
- Hippos and crocodiles
- Baboons and vervet monkeys
Wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed, but experienced guides use their knowledge of animal behaviour, water sources, tracks, and recent sightings to provide the best possible experience.
Birdwatching in Ruaha
Ruaha is home to more than 570 recorded bird species, making it an excellent destination for birdwatching. The park’s rivers, grasslands, woodlands, and rocky areas support both resident and migratory birds.
Travelers may see hornbills, kingfishers, bee-eaters, eagles, vultures, storks, herons, rollers, and many other species. The greener months are particularly rewarding for migratory birds and photography.
Best Time for a Ruaha Safari
Ruaha can be visited throughout the year, but every season offers a different experience.
June to October: Dry Season
The dry season is generally considered the best time for wildlife viewing. Animals gather around rivers and remaining water sources, while the thinner vegetation makes wildlife easier to spot.
This season is excellent for observing elephants, buffaloes, lions, leopards, and other predators.
November to March: Green Season
Seasonal rainfall transforms Ruaha into a green and beautiful wilderness. This period offers dramatic skies, newborn animals, migratory birds, and excellent photographic conditions.
Visitor numbers are also lower, creating an even quieter safari experience.
April and May: Rainy Season
These are traditionally the wettest months. Some camps may close temporarily, and certain roads can become difficult to access. However, travelers may benefit from seasonal offers and exceptionally green scenery where operations remain available.
Ruaha Safari Accommodation
Our packages can be arranged with different accommodation categories.
Budget Accommodation
Budget packages may use simple lodges or camps outside the park. These options are suitable for adventurous travelers who prioritize wildlife experiences and affordability.
Mid-Range Lodges and Tented Camps
Mid-range accommodation normally provides private bathrooms, comfortable beds, quality meals, and attractive natural surroundings. This category offers a good balance between comfort and price.
Luxury Safari Camps
Luxury Ruaha camps provide spacious tented suites, personalised service, excellent dining, and outstanding locations. Some properties offer private verandas, swimming pools, walking safaris, and sundowner experiences.
We select accommodation according to your budget, preferred comfort level, travel dates, and availability.
Road Safari or Fly-In Safari?
Ruaha Road Safari
A road safari offers the chance to observe rural landscapes and visit additional destinations along the way. It may be more affordable, particularly for small private groups.
However, Ruaha is far from Dar es Salaam, so road itineraries require sufficient travel time.
Ruaha Fly-In Safari
A fly-in safari significantly reduces travel time and provides beautiful aerial views. Domestic flights connect Ruaha with Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, and selected safari destinations, depending on the current schedule.
A fly-in package is particularly convenient for honeymooners, families, and travelers combining Ruaha with Zanzibar.
Private Ruaha Safari Experience
Our private packages provide a dedicated safari vehicle and professional guide for your booking. You will not share the vehicle with travelers outside your group.
A private safari offers:
- Flexible departure times
- More time at preferred sightings
- Personalised game-drive planning
- Greater comfort and privacy
- Better conditions for photography
- Freedom to travel at your preferred pace
Vehicles have pop-up roofs for wildlife viewing and photography. Drinking water is supplied during game drives.
