Serengeti Lake Manyara Safari: Itinerary, Wildlife & Travel Tips

Safari & Travel Tips

A Serengeti and Lake Manyara safari brings together two distinct sides of northern Tanzania. In Lake Manyara National Park, you can travel from groundwater forest to open lake views within a relatively short game drive. In the Serengeti, you can spend days exploring vast plains, river valleys, and rocky outcrops in search of wildlife.

The parks work well together, but they are not next door to each other. A good itinerary allows enough time for the drive into the Serengeti and, ideally, includes another northern circuit destination along the route. This guide will help you decide how many days to spend, what you might see, and how to plan a trip that feels comfortable rather than rushed.

Why combine Lake Manyara and the Serengeti?

Lake Manyara is a rewarding introduction to Tanzania’s landscapes. The park sits below the Great Rift Valley escarpment and is known for its forest, birdlife, elephants, and striking scenery. Its compact size makes it possible to explore on the first day of a longer safari.

The Serengeti offers a different scale of experience. Its open country supports predators and large grazing animals, while its varied habitats make every game drive feel different. It is also the setting for parts of the Great Migration, although the herds move throughout the year and cannot be guaranteed in one location.

Combining the two parks gives you a change in scenery as well as wildlife encounters. It also makes sense geographically when travelling from Arusha toward the Serengeti.

What can you see in Lake Manyara National Park?

A game drive in Lake Manyara often begins among tall trees and dense vegetation. This forest is a good place to look for baboons, monkeys, and elephants. As you continue, the landscape opens toward the lake and surrounding grassland.

The park is especially appealing to travellers who enjoy birds and varied scenery. Depending on water levels and seasonal conditions, you may see waterbirds around the lake. Giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, and other animals may also be spotted during a game drive.

Lake Manyara is sometimes associated with tree-climbing lions. They do live in the park, but sightings are uncommon and should be treated as a possibility, not a promise. Wildlife viewing also changes with lake levels, rainfall, and the movement of animals. Your guide can adjust the route based on recent conditions.

What makes a Serengeti safari special?

The Serengeti is large enough that its regions can feel like separate destinations. Central Serengeti, often called Seronera, is a popular choice for a first visit because it offers year-round wildlife viewing. Its plains, watercourses, and rocky outcrops provide habitat for lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, and many grazing species.

The Great Migration adds another reason to visit. Wildebeest and zebras follow changing grazing conditions across the wider Serengeti ecosystem. Their location varies by season and rainfall, so choosing a region matters more than simply choosing a month.

If the migration is your main priority, tell your safari planner. A Central Serengeti itinerary, a northern Serengeti river-focused itinerary, and a southern Serengeti or Ndutu calving-season itinerary require different routes and amounts of time. Wildlife remains unpredictable, even with careful planning.

How many days do you need?

A four-day safari is a practical starting point if you want to include Lake Manyara, the Serengeti, and Ngorongoro Crater. It gives you a taste of each destination, though the days involving the Serengeti will include substantial driving.

With five or six days, you can spend more time on game drives and have a less hurried journey. An extra day in the Serengeti is especially valuable if photography, predator sightings, or simply enjoying the landscape is important to you.

A very short trip covering only Lake Manyara and the Serengeti is possible in some circumstances, but the distance makes it less appealing by road. For most travellers, it is worth allowing at least one full day in the Serengeti in addition to the arrival and departure drives.

Sample five-day Serengeti and Lake Manyara safari itinerary

Day 1: Arusha to Lake Manyara

Leave Arusha and travel toward Lake Manyara National Park. Spend the day exploring its forest, open areas, and lake views. After your game drive, continue to your accommodation near Mto wa Mbu or Karatu.

Day 2: Travel to the Serengeti

Set out for the Serengeti, travelling through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. This is a long but scenic journey. Enter the Serengeti and enjoy a game drive on the way to your camp or lodge.

Day 3: Full day in the Serengeti

Spend the day exploring the Serengeti with your guide. You might begin early, when animals are often active and the light is excellent for photography. Your route will depend on wildlife movements, road conditions, and where you are staying.

Day 4: Serengeti to the Ngorongoro area

Enjoy a morning game drive before travelling back toward Ngorongoro. Stay near the crater rim or in Karatu, according to your accommodation choice and the following day’s plans.

Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater and return to Arusha

Descend into Ngorongoro Crater for a game drive, then return to Arusha later in the day. The crater adds another distinct landscape and wildlife experience to the journey.

This is an example rather than a fixed schedule. Departure times, park entry arrangements, and accommodation locations can change the pace of each day.

When is the best time to go?

You can visit both parks throughout the year. The best time depends on what you most want to experience.

The drier months, particularly from around June to October, are popular for safaris. Vegetation may be less dense in some areas, while wildlife often gathers near reliable water sources. These months can also bring high demand for accommodation.

The greener months offer fresh landscapes and excellent photographic colour. Some travellers choose the period from roughly December to March with the hope of visiting the southern Serengeti or Ndutu during the calving season. That requires an itinerary designed for that region; a standard Central Serengeti trip does not automatically take you to the calving grounds.

For the northern Serengeti and potential Mara River crossings, travellers usually consider the period from around July to October. Crossings are natural events and cannot be scheduled or guaranteed.

Lake Manyara’s scenery and wildlife viewing also vary with rainfall and lake levels. If your dates are flexible, discuss your priorities before choosing a route.

Should you choose a private or shared safari?

A private safari gives your party a dedicated vehicle and guide. It offers more flexibility for stops, game-drive timing, accommodation choices, and photography. It is particularly useful if you want to target a specific Serengeti region or spend additional nights there.

A shared safari can be a more affordable way to explore the northern circuit. It follows a set route and schedule with other travellers. Before booking, check exactly which parks are included, how many nights you will spend in the Serengeti, and what type of accommodation is provided. A shared itinerary covering Central Serengeti will not necessarily reach northern Serengeti or Ndutu.

Neither option guarantees particular animal sightings. The right choice depends on your budget, available time, and how much flexibility you want.

Accommodation: camping or lodges?

Safari accommodation ranges from public campsites to tented camps and lodges. Camping can be an adventurous and budget-conscious choice, while a lodge or tented camp may offer a private bathroom and greater comfort after a long drive.

Location matters as much as the style of accommodation. Staying inside the Serengeti can reduce travel before an early game drive. On the other hand, the price, availability, and route need to work together. Ask where each overnight stay is located and how it affects the following day’s journey.

During busy travel periods, booking early gives you a better chance of securing accommodation that fits your preferred itinerary.

Practical tips for your trip

  • Allow for road travel. The drive toward the Serengeti takes much of a day, even when game viewing is included along the way.
  • Bring layers. Mornings and evenings, especially around Ngorongoro, can feel cool.
  • Carry sun protection. A hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are useful during open-vehicle game drives.
  • Pack a camera or binoculars. Some animals will be distant, and you may want to watch them without asking your guide to drive closer.
  • Keep expectations flexible. Your guide may change the game-drive route in response to sightings, weather, or road conditions.
  • Check your inclusions. Confirm park fees, accommodation, meals, drinks, transfers, and any optional activities before paying a deposit.

Is this the right safari for you?

A Serengeti and Lake Manyara safari is a strong choice if you want contrasting landscapes within one northern Tanzania journey. Lake Manyara adds forest, birdlife, and Rift Valley scenery. The Serengeti gives you more time in open wildlife country and the chance to explore one of Africa’s best-known ecosystems.

For a balanced trip, plan around the driving distances and spend enough time in the Serengeti to enjoy the experience. If you have five days, adding Ngorongoro Crater creates a varied route. If you have longer, consider an extra Serengeti night or a route tailored to the migration season.
