A Tanzania safari should give you time to enjoy wildlife, appreciate the landscapes and relax between destinations. With thoughtful Serengeti safari Northern Circuit planning, you can combine the Serengeti plains, Tarangire’s elephant country and the Ngorongoro Crater in one rewarding journey.
Kilipath African Safaris helps you create an itinerary around your travel dates, budget and interests. Whether you prefer a private lodge safari, a camping adventure or a shared group departure, your package can be planned to suit the experience you want.
What Is Tanzania’s Northern Circuit?
The Northern Circuit is a popular safari region linking destinations such as Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Serengeti and Ngorongoro. Arusha is a convenient starting point for journeys through this region.
Each destination adds something different. Tarangire is known for elephants and baobab landscapes, while Serengeti offers extensive plains and the Great Migration. Ngorongoro brings dramatic scenery and varied wildlife habitats within its crater.
The Northern Circuit and Northern Serengeti are different. The Northern Circuit describes the wider safari route. Northern Serengeti is one particular part of Serengeti National Park. A Northern Circuit package does not automatically include a visit to Northern Serengeti.
Choose a Safari Length That Matches Your Priorities
Before selecting accommodation, decide how much time you want to spend exploring.
A four-day safari can introduce you to Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro, although it includes substantial driving. A five- or six-day private itinerary gives you more flexibility and can include two nights in Serengeti.
For travelers interested in a particular migration area, a longer itinerary may be useful. The route should reflect the season and the location of your accommodation, with enough time to reach the relevant area comfortably.
Suggested Five-Day Private Safari Package
This sample itinerary combines three major destinations and includes two nights in Central Serengeti. Accommodation and the order of activities can be adjusted during quotation.
Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire National Park
Depart from Arusha after breakfast and travel to Tarangire for a game drive. Explore landscapes shaped by baobab trees, river habitats and open grassland.
Tarangire offers wildlife viewing throughout the year, with animals gathering around the Tarangire River during the dry season.
Enjoy lunch during your visit before continuing to your lodge or campsite in the Karatu or surrounding area.
Day 2: Travel to Central Serengeti
After breakfast, continue through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area toward Serengeti. This is a substantial travel day, so your itinerary should allow realistic time for the journey and entry procedures.
Enjoy wildlife viewing as you approach your camp, subject to arrival time. Dinner and overnight are at your selected Central Serengeti accommodation.
Day 3: Full Day in Serengeti
Spend the day exploring Serengeti with your guide. Having a full day here gives you more opportunity to observe animal behavior and revisit promising wildlife areas.
Depending on your preferences, your guide can arrange a full-day outing with a packed lunch or plan activities around meals at camp.
An optional sunrise balloon safari can be requested during booking, subject to availability and an additional charge.
Day 4: Serengeti to Ngorongoro or Karatu
Enjoy a morning game drive before continuing toward the Ngorongoro area. Your overnight location can be on the crater rim or in Karatu, depending on your accommodation preferences and budget.
Your guide will coordinate the departure time to balance wildlife viewing with the onward journey.
Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater and Return to Arusha
Depart early for your crater visit. Explore its grasslands, wetlands and woodland habitats while searching for wildlife with your guide. Animal sightings vary, and no particular species can be guaranteed.
After the game drive, return to Arusha. Any onward flight should be discussed before booking so sufficient transfer time can be allowed.
When Should You Travel?
Your preferred wildlife experience should influence your travel dates. TANAPA identifies June to October as a dry-season period for Serengeti visits and January to February for the calving season.
Migration movements depend on rainfall and grazing conditions. Your camp location therefore matters as much as your travel month. River crossings are unpredictable and cannot be scheduled or guaranteed.
Share your main interests when requesting a quote: migration herds, photography, general wildlife viewing or a relaxed family holiday.
Private or Shared Safari?
A private safari gives your party a dedicated vehicle and guide, with greater flexibility over the route, accommodation and daily pace. It is a useful option for travelers requesting two Serengeti nights or a specific migration region.
A shared safari helps reduce costs by joining other travelers on a scheduled route. Kilipath’s shared vehicles accommodate a maximum of seven guests, with a guaranteed window seat for each person. Confirm the exact itinerary and overnight arrangements before booking, as shared departures have a fixed schedule.
Accommodation and Package Inclusions
Choose from camping, comfortable lodges or higher-end tented camps. Consider location alongside comfort: a well-positioned camp can reduce driving and give you more time in your preferred wildlife area.
Your written quotation should specify:
- Safari transport and guide services.
- Park fees and crater charges.
- Accommodation or camping equipment.
- Included meals and drinking water.
- Pickup and drop-off arrangements.
Flights, airport transfers, balloon safaris, tips and personal expenses should be clearly identified as included or additional.
What Determines the Price?
Safari cost depends on your dates, group size, duration, accommodation and transport arrangements. Private and shared packages are priced differently, while seasonal room rates can affect the total.
Request a complete quotation rather than comparing headline prices alone. Check the number of Serengeti nights, named accommodation, included fees and transfer arrangements.
