Why Combine a Tanzania Safari with Zanzibar?

A safari and beach combination gives travelers two completely different experiences in one holiday. Northern Tanzania offers dramatic landscapes and extraordinary wildlife, while Zanzibar provides beautiful beaches, warm ocean water and fascinating Swahili culture.

The combination works particularly well because regular domestic flights connect Arusha, Kilimanjaro, and the Serengeti with Zanzibar. You can finish your morning safari and arrive on the island later the same day.

The main advantages include:

  • Witnessing African wildlife in its natural habitat
  • Visiting the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater
  • Enjoying private game drives with a professional guide
  • Relaxing on Zanzibar’s white-sand beaches
  • Exploring Stone Town and traditional spice farms
  • Choosing activities such as snorkeling, diving and sailing
  • Experiencing both mainland and island cultures
  • Customizing the trip for a honeymoon or family holiday

Day 1: Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport

Welcome to Tanzania. A representative from Kilipath African Safaris will meet you at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer you to your hotel in Arusha.

Depending on your arrival time, you can relax at the hotel or explore part of Arusha. Your safari consultant or guide will meet you for a short briefing about the journey ahead.

Accommodation: Arusha hotel or lodge
Meals: According to your accommodation package

Day 2: Arusha to Tarangire National Park

After breakfast, your private safari begins with a drive to Tarangire National Park. The journey normally takes approximately two hours from Arusha.

Tarangire is famous for its enormous baobab trees, diverse landscapes, and large elephant population. During the dry season, animals gather around the Tarangire River, creating excellent opportunities to see elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffaloes, and numerous antelope species.

Predators such as lions, leopards and cheetahs also inhabit the park. Your guide will help locate wildlife and explain the animals’ behavior, the ecosystem, and the park’s conservation work.

A picnic or hot lunch will be served during the game drive. Later in the afternoon, you will travel to your lodge or tented camp for dinner and overnight.

Accommodation: Karatu or Tarangire
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 3: Journey to Serengeti National Park

After breakfast, travel toward Serengeti National Park through the beautiful Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The journey offers impressive views of the highlands and the vast plains leading toward the Serengeti.

Serengeti means “endless plains,” an appropriate description of its seemingly limitless grasslands. The park is one of Africa’s most important wildlife areas and supports lions, elephants, giraffes, cheetahs, leopards, buffaloes, hippos, and many other species.

After completing the park entry formalities, enjoy an afternoon game drive while traveling toward your accommodation. This is your introduction to one of the world’s most famous safari destinations.

Accommodation: Serengeti tented camp or lodge
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 4: Full-Day Serengeti Safari

Today is dedicated to exploring Serengeti National Park. An early departure provides a chance to see predators when they are most active and enjoy the beautiful morning light.

Your guide will select the game-drive route based on recent wildlife movements, weather conditions, and seasonal migration patterns. You may encounter lion prides resting near kopjes, cheetahs scanning the plains, elephants moving through woodland, or leopards hiding in acacia trees.

The Serengeti is also central to the Great Migration. More than a million wildebeest, accompanied by zebras and gazelles, move through the Serengeti ecosystem in search of fresh grass and water.

Migration locations change throughout the year:

  • December to April: Southern Serengeti and Ndutu calving areas
  • May to June: Central and Western Serengeti
  • July to October: Northern Serengeti and Mara River region
  • November: Herds gradually return toward the south

Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed because the animals move naturally. However, traveling in the appropriate season increases the possibility of witnessing large herds and dramatic predator activity.

An optional hot-air balloon safari can be arranged at an additional cost. The flight normally takes place early in the morning and provides panoramic views across the Serengeti.

Accommodation: Serengeti tented camp or lodge
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 5: Serengeti to Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Begin the day with another Serengeti game drive. Morning hours are ideal for wildlife viewing because temperatures are cooler and animals are often active.

After lunch, continue toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Depending on your itinerary and interests, an optional visit to a Maasai village or Olduvai Gorge can be organized.

The road rises from the plains toward the Ngorongoro highlands, where temperatures can be noticeably cooler. You will spend the night close to the crater or in Karatu, preparing for an early descent the following morning.

Accommodation: Ngorongoro or Karatu lodge
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 6: Ngorongoro Crater and Flight to Zanzibar

After an early breakfast, descend approximately 600 meters into the Ngorongoro Crater for a remarkable game drive.

The crater is a vast volcanic caldera supporting a dense concentration of wildlife. Its grasslands, woodland, wetlands, and freshwater areas create habitats for thousands of animals.

Possible sightings include:

  • Lions
  • Elephants
  • Buffaloes
  • Zebras
  • Wildebeest
  • Hippos
  • Hyenas
  • Jackals
  • Flamingos
  • Black rhinoceroses

The Ngorongoro Crater is one of Tanzania’s best locations for searching for the Big Five, although every sighting depends on nature and local conditions.

After the game drive and lunch, return to Arusha for an evening flight to Zanzibar. On arrival at Zanzibar Airport, a driver will transfer you to your beach hotel.

When flight times do not allow a same-day connection, an additional night in Arusha can be included.

Accommodation: Zanzibar beach resort
Meals: Breakfast and lunch

Day 7: Zanzibar Beach Relaxation

Wake up beside the Indian Ocean and enjoy a relaxed morning at your resort. Zanzibar is known for powdery beaches, clear water, coral reefs, and warm tropical weather.

Spend the day swimming, sunbathing, walking along the beach, or enjoying the hotel facilities. Depending on your location, you can also book kayaking, paddleboarding, snorkeling, diving, or a traditional dhow cruise.

Popular Zanzibar beach areas include:

  • Nungwi: Lively atmosphere, swimming and sunset cruises
  • Kendwa: Wide beach and relatively small tidal changes
  • Paje: Kiteboarding and a relaxed social atmosphere
  • Jambiani: Traditional coastal village environment
  • Matemwe: Peaceful setting near Mnemba Island
  • Kiwengwa: Long beach with a selection of resorts

Accommodation: Zanzibar beach resort
Meals: According to your chosen plan

Day 8: Stone Town and Spice Farm Tour

Today, discover Zanzibar’s cultural and historical character. Begin with a guided walking tour of Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Explore narrow streets lined with historic buildings, carved wooden doors, markets, mosques, churches, and former merchant houses. Your guide will explain Zanzibar’s complex history and its connections to African, Arab, Indian and European cultures.

The tour may include the Old Fort, Forodhani Gardens, Darajani Market, the House of Wonders area, and the former slave market.

Continue to a spice farm to learn why Zanzibar is called the Spice Island. You can see and smell cloves, vanilla, cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, black pepper, and tropical fruits growing naturally.

Return to your beach resort in the afternoon.

Accommodation: Zanzibar beach resort
Meals: According to your chosen plan

Day 9: Zanzibar Activities or Free Day

Enjoy another day at leisure or select an optional Zanzibar excursion.

Popular activities include:

Mnemba Island Snorkeling

Explore clear waters and coral reefs close to Mnemba Atoll. Marine life may include colorful reef fish, dolphins, starfish, and sea turtles, although sightings are never guaranteed.

Safari Blue

Sail in a traditional dhow through the Menai Bay Conservation Area. The excursion often includes snorkeling, sandbank relaxation, tropical fruits, and a seafood lunch.

Prison Island Tour

Visit Changuu Island to see its giant Aldabra tortoises and learn about the island’s history.

Jozani Forest

Walk through Zanzibar’s most famous forest reserve and search for the endemic Zanzibar red colobus monkey.

Sunset Dhow Cruise

Enjoy a peaceful evening cruise while watching the sun disappear over the Indian Ocean. This is an excellent option for honeymooners and couples.

Accommodation: Zanzibar beach resort
Meals: According to your chosen plan

Day 10: Departure from Zanzibar

Enjoy breakfast and your final hours at the resort. Depending on the departure time, you may have time to swim, shop for souvenirs, or relax beside the ocean.
