Suggested 6-Day Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire National Park

Your Tarangire safari Ruaha adventure begins with collection from your hotel in Arusha. After meeting your guide, you will travel to Tarangire National Park for your first game drive.

Tarangire is famous for its elephants, baobab trees, and seasonal Tarangire River. Wildlife frequently gathers around the river, especially during the dry season. You may encounter zebras, giraffes, wildebeest, buffaloes, impalas, warthogs, lions, leopards, and numerous bird species.

After the game drive, you will travel to your selected lodge or tented camp for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 2: Tarangire to Dodoma

After breakfast, enjoy another game drive in Tarangire National Park. The morning provides excellent opportunities to observe elephants, predators, and birds while temperatures remain comfortable.

Later, you will leave Tarangire and continue toward Dodoma. This scenic transfer breaks up the journey between northern Tanzania and Ruaha National Park. Upon arrival, check into your accommodation and relax before dinner.

Day 3: Dodoma to Ruaha National Park

Following breakfast, continue toward Ruaha National Park. The journey introduces you to rural Tanzania, traditional villages, changing vegetation, and beautiful landscapes.

You will enter Ruaha and begin exploring one of Tanzania’s largest and most untouched national parks. Unlike the busy northern parks, Ruaha offers quiet game drives and authentic wilderness experiences.

Look for elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, greater kudu, sable antelopes, lions, and other wildlife. After your introductory game drive, proceed to your lodge or camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Full-Day Ruaha Safari

Spend an entire day exploring Ruaha National Park. Your guide will select the most productive areas according to recent wildlife movements and local conditions.

The Great Ruaha River is an important water source and attracts elephants, buffaloes, antelopes, crocodiles, hippos, and predators. Lions are frequently observed near riverbeds and open plains, while leopards may be found around wooded areas.

Ruaha is also one of Tanzania’s important habitats for African wild dogs. Although sightings cannot be guaranteed, exploring this remote park provides a valuable opportunity to search for these endangered predators.

You may enjoy a picnic lunch inside the park or return to your lodge, depending on your preferred schedule. Continue with an afternoon game drive before returning for dinner and overnight.

Day 5: Another Full-Day Ruaha Adventure

Enjoy a second full day in Ruaha, allowing you to explore areas you may not have reached previously. Having multiple days inside the park increases your chances of finding different wildlife species and witnessing interesting animal behavior.

Photographers can spend more time at sightings, while other travelers can appreciate the silence and natural beauty of the park. Your private safari format allows the schedule to be adjusted according to your interests.

Return to your lodge or tented camp after the evening game drive.

Day 6: Ruaha to Iringa or Flight Connection

After breakfast, enjoy a final morning game drive before leaving Ruaha National Park. Depending on your travel arrangements, you can continue by road to Iringa or take a scheduled flight to Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, or another destination.

Airport transfers and additional accommodation can be arranged according to your onward travel plans.

Why Visit Tarangire National Park?

Tarangire is one of Tanzania’s most rewarding safari destinations. It is particularly famous for its elephant population, with herds sometimes containing dozens of animals.

The park’s ancient baobab trees create a distinctive landscape, while the Tarangire River supports wildlife throughout the dry season. Visitors can see four members of the Big Five: lions, leopards, elephants, and buffaloes. Rhinos are not naturally present in the park.

Tarangire is also an excellent birdwatching destination, with more than 500 recorded species. Common sightings include hornbills, eagles, vultures, ostriches, weavers, bee-eaters, and colorful lovebirds.

Why Include Ruaha National Park?

Ruaha offers a different safari atmosphere. Its remote location means fewer visitors and safari vehicles, giving travelers more private and peaceful wildlife encounters.

The park contains varied landscapes, including river systems, rocky hills, baobab forests, open plains, and miombo woodland. This variety supports elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, greater kudu, sable antelopes, lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, and African wild dogs.

Ruaha is particularly attractive to returning safari travelers, photographers, and visitors who prefer genuine wilderness over crowded tourism routes.

Best Time for the Adventure

The dry season from June through October is generally excellent for wildlife viewing. Animals gather near permanent water sources, vegetation becomes less dense, and wildlife is easier to locate.

The green season from November through May offers beautiful landscapes, fewer visitors, excellent birdwatching, and opportunities to see newborn animals. Short rains may occur, but game drives remain possible.

The best period ultimately depends on your budget, wildlife interests, preferred scenery, and travel dates.
