The crater is also one of the better places in northern Tanzania to search for the endangered black rhinoceros. However, sightings depend on the animals’ location, weather and visibility.

Sample Five-Day Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro Safari

Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire National Park

Your professional safari guide will collect you from your hotel in Arusha. After a short briefing, you will drive to Tarangire National Park.

Enjoy a game drive through baobab woodlands, open savannah and areas surrounding the Tarangire River. Your guide will help locate elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, lions and other wildlife.

Lunch will be served at a designated picnic area. In the late afternoon, continue to your lodge or tented camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Tarangire to Serengeti National Park

After breakfast, travel toward Serengeti National Park through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The journey offers changing scenery, from cultivated highlands to expansive plains.

After completing the park entry formalities, begin your first Serengeti game drive. Continue toward Central Serengeti while searching for lions, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes and large groups of grazing animals.

Dinner and overnight will be at a lodge or tented camp in Serengeti.

Day 3: Full-Day Serengeti Game Drive

Spend a complete day exploring Serengeti National Park. The schedule can be adjusted according to wildlife activity and your preferences.

You may depart early in the morning when predators are active, return to camp for lunch and continue in the afternoon. Alternatively, you can take a packed lunch and enjoy a full-day game drive in more distant areas.

Your guide will choose suitable routes based on recent sightings, seasonal animal movements and road conditions.

An optional hot-air balloon safari can be arranged at an additional cost. The balloon experience normally begins before sunrise and includes approximately one hour in the air, followed by a celebration and breakfast.

Day 4: Serengeti to Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Enjoy another morning game drive in Serengeti before traveling toward Ngorongoro. The morning provides additional opportunities to search for animals that may not have been seen during the previous day.

After lunch, continue toward your accommodation near Ngorongoro or in Karatu. Arrive in time to relax, enjoy dinner and prepare for the following day’s crater safari.

Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater to Arusha

After an early breakfast, drive to the crater entry point and descend approximately 600 meters to the crater floor.

Explore grasslands, woodland and wetland areas while searching for lions, elephants, buffaloes, hippos, hyenas and black rhinos. Lunch is usually served at a picnic site inside the crater.

After completing the game drive, ascend from the crater and travel back to Arusha. You can be dropped off at your hotel or transferred to the airport, depending on your onward arrangements.

When Is the Best Time to Visit?

Tarangire and Serengeti can be visited throughout the year, but every season offers a different experience.

June to October

This is the main dry season. Wildlife often gathers around permanent water sources, making Tarangire particularly rewarding. Vegetation becomes thinner, and many roads remain dry.

July through October is also an important period for Northern Serengeti and possible Mara River crossings.

November to December

Short rains can refresh the landscape, improve visibility and attract migratory birds. The parks often become greener, although short showers may occur.

January to March

This period is excellent for Southern Serengeti and Ndutu. Wildebeest calving normally occurs around January and February, attracting predators to the region.

April and May
