Tanzania Safari Package: Northern Circuit Vacation

Safari & Travel Tips

Experience the extraordinary wildlife, landscapes and cultures of East Africa with our Tanzania safari package Northern Circuit vacation. This carefully designed safari takes you through some of Tanzania’s most famous destinations, including Tarangire National Park, Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater.

Tanzania’s Northern Circuit is an excellent choice for first-time visitors, couples, families, photographers and groups looking for a complete African safari experience. The route combines remarkable wildlife viewing with beautiful scenery, comfortable accommodation and professional guiding.

During your Northern Circuit safari, you can search for lions resting in the grass, elephants walking beneath ancient baobab trees, cheetahs scanning the Serengeti plains and large herds of wildebeest moving across the savannah. You will also descend into the Ngorongoro Crater, one of Africa’s most remarkable wildlife areas.

Our experienced safari team handles the important arrangements, including transportation, park fees, accommodation, meals and game drives. This allows you to relax and concentrate on the adventure.

Why Choose Tanzania’s Northern Safari Circuit?

The Northern Circuit contains several of Tanzania’s most celebrated national parks. Its destinations are connected by a practical safari route beginning in Arusha, making it possible to experience different landscapes and wildlife habitats within one vacation.

Depending on the length of your safari, the circuit can include:

  • Tarangire National Park
  • Lake Manyara National Park
  • Serengeti National Park
  • Ngorongoro Conservation Area
  • Ngorongoro Crater
  • Lake Eyasi
  • Lake Natron
  • Arusha National Park

The Northern Circuit is especially famous for its high concentration of wildlife. Travelers can encounter elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffaloes, hippos, hyenas and many species of antelope.

It is also home to the Great Wildebeest Migration. More than a million wildebeest, accompanied by zebras and gazelles, move through the Serengeti ecosystem in search of fresh grass and water. The exact location of the herds changes throughout the year, so your itinerary can be adjusted according to your travel dates.

Tanzania Northern Circuit Safari Highlights

Tarangire National Park

Tarangire is known for its large elephant population, dramatic baobab trees and peaceful wilderness. The Tarangire River is the park’s principal permanent water source and attracts many animals, particularly during the dry season.

Visitors may see elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffaloes, lions, leopards and numerous antelope species. Tarangire is also an excellent birdwatching destination, with hundreds of recorded bird species.

The park has a distinctive atmosphere. Ancient baobabs rise above the landscape, while elephants frequently walk close to safari vehicles. During the dry months, large numbers of animals gather around the river, creating excellent wildlife-viewing opportunities.

Serengeti National Park

The Serengeti is the heart of Tanzania’s Northern Circuit and one of the most famous wildlife destinations in the world. Its name is associated with endless plains, abundant predators and the spectacular Great Migration.

The Central Serengeti, also known as the Seronera area, offers rewarding wildlife viewing throughout the year. Its permanent water sources attract many resident animals, including lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes and hippos.

The landscape changes as you travel through the park. Open plains are interrupted by rocky kopjes, acacia woodlands and river valleys. Kopjes provide resting and observation points for lions, leopards and other animals.

Game drives are normally conducted in the morning and afternoon, when wildlife is most active. However, a private safari allows greater flexibility, including longer periods at important sightings and the opportunity to adjust the daily schedule.

Ngorongoro Crater

The Ngorongoro Crater is one of the natural highlights of any Tanzania safari package. Formed following the collapse of an ancient volcano, the crater has developed into a protected wildlife ecosystem surrounded by steep walls.

After an early breakfast, you will drive to the crater rim and descend approximately 600 metres to the crater floor. Inside, you may encounter lions, elephants, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, hyenas and different species of gazelle.

The crater is also one of Tanzania’s better places to search for the endangered black rhinoceros. Sightings cannot be guaranteed, but the open landscape provides good opportunities to observe animals from a distance.

A picnic lunch is usually served near the hippo pool or another designated picnic area. After lunch, the game drive continues before ascending the crater wall and returning toward Karatu or Arusha.

Detailed Northern Circuit Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Tanzania

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha Airport, you will be welcomed by a professional representative from our company. After meeting your driver, you will be transferred to your accommodation in Arusha.

The drive gives you your first introduction to northern Tanzania. Depending on your arrival time, you can relax at the hotel, explore Arusha or meet your safari representative for a detailed briefing.

During the briefing, we will explain your itinerary, driving times, accommodation arrangements and what to expect during the safari. This is also a good opportunity to ask questions and discuss any dietary or personal requirements.

Accommodation: Arusha hotel or lodge
Meals: Depending on arrival time and booked meal plan

Day 2: Arusha to Tarangire National Park

After breakfast, your guide will collect you from the hotel and begin the drive to Tarangire National Park. The journey usually takes approximately two to three hours, depending on traffic and the location of your accommodation.

After completing the entrance formalities, you will begin your first game drive. Tarangire’s varied environment includes grasslands, baobab woodland, swamps and the Tarangire River.

The park is particularly famous for its elephants. Families of elephants can often be observed feeding, drinking or walking along the river. Your guide will explain the animals’ behavior and help identify birds, plants and smaller species that are sometimes overlooked.

A picnic or hot lunch will be provided during the day. The game drive continues in the afternoon before traveling to your lodge, tented camp or campsite for dinner and an overnight stay.

Accommodation: Lodge, tented camp or public campsite
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 3: Tarangire to Serengeti National Park

After breakfast, you will depart for Serengeti National Park. The route passes through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where the landscape changes from cultivated highlands to the vast plains of the Serengeti ecosystem.

Weather and road conditions permitting, you may stop at a viewpoint overlooking the Ngorongoro Crater. The viewpoint offers an impressive introduction to the scale of the crater and its surrounding highlands.

You will continue toward the Serengeti, entering the park through Naabi Hill Gate. After registration and lunch, the journey becomes a game drive toward the Central Serengeti.

Wildlife may appear at any point along the route. Zebras, wildebeest, giraffes, hyenas and gazelles are frequently observed across the plains. Predators such as lions and cheetahs may also be seen resting or searching for prey.

You will arrive at your accommodation in the evening for dinner and relaxation.

Accommodation: Serengeti lodge, tented camp or campsite
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 4: Full-Day Serengeti Game Drive

Today is dedicated to exploring Serengeti National Park. An early start offers the opportunity to see predators while they are still active and to enjoy the plains in the gentle morning light.

Your guide will use experience, recent wildlife reports and animal tracks to select the best game-drive areas. Since nature is unpredictable, every Serengeti game drive is different.

You may observe lions resting beside rocky kopjes, cheetahs using termite mounds as observation points or elephants moving through acacia woodland. Leopards are sometimes seen resting in trees along the Seronera River, while hippos gather in permanent pools.

A picnic lunch can be enjoyed inside the park, allowing more time for wildlife viewing. Alternatively, guests staying at selected lodges may return for lunch before continuing with an afternoon game drive.

For an additional cost, a sunrise hot-air balloon safari can be arranged. The activity normally includes an early-morning transfer, approximately one hour in the air, a certificate and a celebratory breakfast.

Accommodation: Serengeti lodge, tented camp or campsite
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 5: Serengeti to Ngorongoro Conservation Area

After breakfast, you will enjoy another game drive in the Serengeti. Morning hours are often productive because temperatures are cooler and animals are more active.

You may revisit an area where predators were seen the previous day or explore another part of the Central Serengeti. Your guide will plan the route according to wildlife movement and the time available.

After lunch, you will travel toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Along the way, you may see Maasai communities living with their livestock in the conservation area.

Optional cultural activities can be added to the itinerary. These may include visiting a Maasai village or stopping at Olduvai Gorge, an important archaeological location connected to research into early human history.

You will continue to your accommodation near the crater rim or in the Karatu highlands.

Accommodation: Ngorongoro or Karatu lodge, tented camp or campsite
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 6: Ngorongoro Crater and Return to Arusha

After an early breakfast, you will drive to the crater entrance and descend to the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater.

The crater supports a remarkable variety of wildlife. During the game drive, you may encounter buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, lions, hyenas, hippos and elephants. Your guide will also search the open grasslands for black rhinoceroses.

Different habitats exist within the crater, including grassland, woodland, marshes and freshwater pools. This diversity allows many animal species to live within a relatively compact area.

You will stop for lunch at a designated picnic site before completing the game drive. In the afternoon, you will ascend the crater wall and drive back to Arusha.

Arrival in Arusha is generally expected in the late afternoon or early evening. We can transfer you to your hotel, Arusha Airport or Kilimanjaro International Airport, depending on your travel arrangements.

Meals: Breakfast and lunch

Safari Accommodation Options

Our Tanzania Northern Circuit vacation can be arranged at different comfort levels.

Budget Camping Safari

Budget camping is ideal for adventurous travelers who want an authentic outdoor experience. Accommodation is provided at public campsites inside or near the national parks.

Tents, mattresses, sleeping bags and pillows can be supplied. A safari chef prepares meals, while showers and toilets are shared at the campsite.

Camping allows you to stay close to nature and hear the sounds of the African wilderness at night.

Mid-Range Lodge and Tented Camp Safari

Mid-range safaris combine comfort, excellent locations and good value. Accommodation may include permanent tented camps, safari lodges and country lodges.

Rooms or safari tents generally have private bathrooms, comfortable beds and dining facilities. Some properties also offer Wi-Fi, charging points, swimming pools and beautiful views.

Luxury Northern Circuit Safari

A luxury safari includes carefully selected lodges and tented camps, personalized service and premium locations. Depending on the itinerary, guests may enjoy spacious suites, gourmet meals, private decks, swimming pools and scenic views.

Luxury packages can also include domestic flights, exclusive camps and additional private activities.

Unless specifically added to your quotation, the following are normally excluded:

  • International flights
  • Tanzania visa fees
  • Travel and medical insurance
  • Personal expenses
  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Optional activities
  • Hot-air balloon safari
  • Laundry services
  • Guide and safari crew gratuities
  • Additional accommodation before or after the safari
  • Items not expressly stated in the itinerary

Safari Vehicle and Professional Guide

Transportation is an important part of your safari experience. We use specially prepared 4×4 Land Cruisers designed for Tanzania’s national parks.

The vehicle normally includes a pop-up roof for wildlife viewing and photography, comfortable seats, seatbelts, charging sockets, a cooler or refrigerator and radio communication.

Your professional guide is responsible for much more than driving. The guide identifies animals and birds, interprets behavior, explains the ecosystem and selects appropriate game-drive routes.

Private safaris provide a dedicated vehicle and guide for your group. This offers additional flexibility when deciding departure times, photography stops and the length of individual sightings.

Best Time for a Northern Circuit Vacation

The Northern Circuit can be visited throughout the year. However, each season offers a different experience.

January to March

The southern Serengeti and Ndutu region generally become important during the wildebeest calving season. Large numbers of young animals are born, attracting lions, cheetahs and hyenas.

April and May

These months normally receive more rainfall. Landscapes become green, birdlife is abundant and some accommodation providers offer reduced seasonal rates. Roads can occasionally be muddy, but wildlife viewing remains possible.

June to October

The dry season is one of the most popular periods for a Tanzania safari. Wildlife gathers around permanent water sources, vegetation becomes thinner and animals can be easier to locate.

Between July and October, migration herds may reach the Northern Serengeti. River crossings can occur during this period, but their timing cannot be guaranteed because the movement depends on rainfall and grazing conditions.

November and December

Short rains often refresh the landscape during November and December. Migration herds begin moving toward the eastern and southern sections of the Serengeti ecosystem. This can be a beautiful period with green scenery and fewer visitors than during the peak dry season.

Can This Safari Be Customized?

Yes. The itinerary can be adjusted according to your travel dates, budget, interests and preferred accommodation category.

Possible customizations include:

  • Adding more nights in the Serengeti
  • Visiting the Northern Serengeti during migration season
  • Including Ndutu during the calving season
  • Adding Lake Manyara National Park
  • Visiting Lake Eyasi and the Hadzabe community
  • Adding a Maasai cultural experience
  • Including a hot-air balloon safari
  • Upgrading accommodation
  • Adding domestic flights
  • Continuing to Zanzibar after the safari
  • Arranging a Mount Kilimanjaro or Mount Meru trek
  • Creating a special honeymoon itinerary
  • Designing a family-friendly safari

Our team will recommend a suitable route after learning your arrival date, group size, budget and preferred travel style.

Tanzania Safari and Zanzibar Extension

Many travelers combine their Northern Circuit safari with a Zanzibar beach vacation. After several exciting days of game drives, Zanzibar provides an opportunity to relax beside the Indian Ocean.

Flights are available from Arusha, Kilimanjaro or selected Serengeti airstrips to Zanzibar. A fly-out option from the Serengeti can reduce driving time and make the journey more comfortable.

In Zanzibar, you can enjoy white-sand beaches, snorkeling, diving, dhow cruises and historic Stone Town. We can arrange airport transfers, beachfront accommodation and island activities as part of one complete Tanzania vacation.

What to Pack for Your Safari

We recommend packing practical, lightweight clothing in neutral colors such as beige, khaki, brown or green.

Useful items include:

  • Comfortable shirts and trousers
  • Warm jacket or fleece
  • Closed walking shoes
  • Sun hat and sunglasses
  • Sunscreen
  • Insect repellent
  • Personal medication
  • Camera and extra memory cards
  • Binoculars
  • Small flashlight
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Travel adapter
  • Copies of important documents

Ngorongoro and the highland areas can be cold in the morning and evening. Bringing warm clothing is important, even when traveling during the dry season.

Soft-sided luggage is generally more convenient than a hard suitcase, particularly when domestic flights are included.

Health and Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is strongly recommended. Your policy should cover medical treatment, trip cancellation, delayed luggage and emergency evacuation.

Travelers should consult a qualified healthcare professional regarding vaccinations, malaria prevention and personal medical requirements before visiting Tanzania.

Any dietary restrictions, allergies, mobility concerns or medical conditions that could affect your safari should be communicated before arrival. This helps our team prepare suitable arrangements.

Responsible and Respectful Travel

Responsible tourism helps protect Tanzania’s wildlife and supports local communities.

During your safari, please follow your guide’s instructions, avoid feeding animals and do not leave waste inside the parks. Keep noise levels low near wildlife and remain inside the vehicle unless your guide confirms that leaving it is permitted.

Travelers visiting communities should request permission before photographing people. Respecting local customs creates a more positive and meaningful cultural experience.
